"It was the largest crowd in Coachella history. It stretched from the foot of the main stage all the way to the back gates, thousands and thousands of people covering the polo fields.

They all waited for one thing: the much-hyped reunion of Rage Against the Machine, one of the most important and influential bands of the '90s and closing act of this year's festival.

And the massive crowd was not disappointed.

At 10:40 p.m. for the first time in seven years, the band took the stage together.

“We are Rage Against the Machine,” frontman Zack De La Rocha pronounced, as if they actually needed an introduction.

Wasting no time, the L.A. natives ripped into “Testify.”

“I think this is a great moment in music,” Palm Desert resident Alec Longmuir said.

And he was right.

Others in the crowd also seemed aware that they were part of something historic, some even compared it to Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock.

Back in 1999, Rage headlined the first-ever Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. But the politically-charged quartet broke up in 2000 due to creative differences.

During their more than a decade together, Rage established itself as both a musical and political force, highlighted by Zach de la Roacha's socially-explosive lyrics and punctuated by Tom Morello's inventive guitar riffs.

On Sunday, their full-throttle set included "People of the Sun,” “Bombtrack,” Bullet in the Head,” and “Know Your Enemy,” all within 30 minutes of taking the Coachella Stage.

During "Know Your Enemy," a handful of fans scaled the 30-foot cage that surrounded the soundboard in the middle of the field.

Gazing down at the cheering crowd beneath them, the climbers waved their hands as Rage soldiered on.

Security eventually brought down the rebellious fans, but not the energy.

The band followed with "Rodeo” and “Guerilla Radio,” as de la Rocha rapped to the crowd, “It has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime."

The crowd answered with a question: "What better place then here, what better time then now?”

Usually stone-faced, intense performer, de la Rocha smiled broadly during “Sleep Now in the Fire,” while Morello ended the song by jumping on a speaker and raising his fist in the air.

And true to their reputation, Rage didn't leave politics out of the show.

During an intense version of “Wake Up,” de la Rocha adressed the crowd:

“This current administration," the singer said, "should be tried, hung and shot as any war criminal should.” As the audience cheered de la Rocha went on to compare the Bush Whitehouse to the Nazis.

The band followed with the epic “Freedom,” and ended their reunion with “Killing in the Name,” during which de la Rocha once again blasted Bush:

“Some of those that hold office, also burn crosses,” he repeated over and over.

Thousands of middle fingers shot up into the air during the song’s closing refrain: "(Expletive) you I won’t do what you tell me!”

Then the band walked to the edge of the stage together and raised four fists.

“Thank you, thank you so much,” a visibly emotional de la Rocha said as the Coachella crowd roared.

Rage Against The Machine's first show in almost seven years brought Coachella to a stunning close tonight (April 29).

Under a simple red star backdrop, the staunchly political quartet treated the biggest crowd of the weekend to an explosive set that spanned the whole of the band's career.

Communication with the audience was was kept to a bare minimum, with Zack De La Rocha kick-starting the comeback with a simple introduction: "Good evening, we're Rage Against The Machine from Los Angeles, California."

The anticipated anti-Bush tirade finally came during the last song of the main set, 'Wake Up'.

Nonetheless the appreciative audience lapped up incendiary performances of classic Rage Against The Machine tracks, including 'Bullet In The Head', 'Know Your Enemy', 'Bulls On Parade' and 'Sleep Now In The Fire'. The band also dipped into their covers album 'Renegades', playing a version of Afrika Bambaataa's 'Renegades Of Funk'.

The set was rounded off by particular raucous run through the band's signature song 'Killing In The Name', with the Coachella crowd relishing the chance to chant its infamous "Fuck you, I won't do
what you tell me" refrain.

ils sont le 18 aout à San Francisco

Parait que Manu Chao était en plein forme et très très rock en ouverture de RATM.

Le son est merdique, mais bon :





ça semble assez à chier l'ambiance
